Indonesia Mentawai Islands

Travel Listing: Hollow Tree’s Resort, Indonesia

Hollow Tree’s Resort, also known as HT’s Resort, regularly surfs up to 10 world-class waves during a typical trip. All of these waves are within a short speedboat or bike ride from the resort. HT’s Resort has a wave to suit all levels but its namesake wave, HT’s – also known as Lance’s Right is the reason most surfers venture to this part of South Sipora Island to surf. From April to October strong swells originate off the coasts of South Africa and Antarctica to ultimately reach the coral reefs in front of the resort. These swells refract and bend around the Mentawai Islands and offer amazing waves and clean, perfect barrels for our guests to enjoy. Throughout the rest of the year the waves are normally a bit less lethal and less crowded, but just as fun.

HT’s Resort gracefully reflects simplicity into the design of their Mentawai Islands resort and accommodation. The resort consists of four villas scattered along Katiet Beach. Each Villa features two rooms (two people per room with one shared bathroom). Both Double and single beds are available.

Enclosed by palm trees, powder-soft sand, and azure waters, the accommodation options offer impressive amenities that will make you feel comfortable and exude a sense of barefoot luxury. The resort is ideal for all types of travelers including couples, solo adventurers, small groups, families (with kids), and big groups.

The Surf

The Mentawai Islands are arguably the most famous surf destination in the world. Their broad exposure towards the vast, southern Indian Ocean provides these majestic islands with remarkable consistency and quality. There are great waves in this area year-round. However, the most ideal time to surf in the Mentawai’s is during the dry season, late March to early November, the southern hemisphere’s winter, when the Indian Ocean is an ultra-active, groundswell producing machine. During the entire year surf charter boats offer the average surfer the opportunity to score the best waves of their lives in the premiere surf location in the entire world, nothing else comes close… We have compiled a brief glimpse of twenty well-known surf spots in the Mentawai Islands that our guests will have access to. We have provided descriptions of the most well known spots – the rest you’ll have to find out about on your own!

If you are looking for little to no crowds and easier waves we suggest you gravitate towards trips starting in March, April, October and November. The waves at HT’s Resort are among some of the best in the world! . Learn more about the spots you’ll be surfing by clicking here.

HT’s / Lance’s Right

Hollow Tree’s, known locally as HT’s or Lance’s Right, is one of the premiere barreling right-handers in the world. Swell lines wrap around the south end of Sipora Island and into the sheltered bay where it they eventually unloads on the outer section of reef known as “The Office”. Some waves swing wide to the inside section affectionately known as the “Surgeon’s Table”. HT’s is best suited for intermediate and advanced surfers and rated as one of the top five waves in the world.

“Hollow Tree’s Resort is a unique destination whether you are a surfer, couple, honeymooner, yoga, adventurer, traveling with a group of friends, a food lover or simply just want to escape and enjoy an exotic slice of paradise.”

Other Activities

There are a myriad of other activities to enjoy during your stay at HT’s Resort.

Home to various species of marine life, such as the Goldstripe Maroon Clownfish (just like the fish off the animated movie Finding Nemo), Sipora Island is an idyllic snorkeling spot.

Go off the beaten path on a hiking trip around the island, where unexpected walkways will expose untouched valleys and mountains. Wear comfortable shoes on a trekking adventure in the direction of hidden waterfalls, dense rainforest, and lush green rice fields.

If meditation is your kind of thing, let the serenity engulf you as you participate in a Yoga session. Beginner, intermediate, and expert Yogis can get practice poses on a daily basis, whilst looking out onto the wave that was discovered back in the 70’s and has since been described as “one of the world’s finest waves”.

If you are interested for yoga classes, please let us know in advance, so we can arrange accordingly.

Traditionally, islanders would kayak on vessels carved out of a tree trunk. Get on one of our kayak and navigate the waters in a simple kayak to witness what the locals see!

Fishing and Cooking
Why not try your hand at fishing with guidance from a local Indonesian angler? Prepare a feast with your catch of the day with fellow foodies.

Stand Up Paddle
On flat days, there are always things to do. Why not paddle out around the islands for a memorable ocean experience.?
